Moving Target Defense
The goal of the presentation is to introduce the concept of Moving Target Defense (MTD). This strategy aims to solve the asymmetry between attackers and targets. With our network infrastructure being static, the attackers have enough time to study it and decide on the approach that would be useful to achieve their goals. While attackers have all this time on their hands, their targets have to keep up with all new vulnerabilities, patches, updates and trying to choose the best options in order to defend their networks and applications.
There are a lot of cases where attackers have gone undetected for months, as the saying goes: “it’s not if, it’s when” and this strategy makes it harder for attackers to achieve their goals. So MTD increases the time and effort an attacker needs in order to achieve their malicious intents. But how is it achieved? By changing the attack surface.
This presentation will cover some techniques that allows us to change the attack surface of our systems, but keeping the same functionality and performance. Also, this presentation will cover MTD in cryptography, but with a twist from the original strategy.
