BIOGRAPHY
Mihai Vasilescu is a Security Research Engineer at Keysight’s Application and Threat Intelligence Research Center. Mihai is responsible for gathering actionable application and security intelligence for Keysight products. Mihai’s passion in work is to help educate people about malicious digital attacks. Mihai specializes in gathering Threat Intel on latest botnets and exploitation techniques seen in network attacks by detonating, analyzing malware and tracking botnets.
Monitoring malware behavior through kernel syscall tracing
Threat actors implement new methods of evasion constantly. One solution to monitor malicious activity generated by an application is the use of sandboxes. Up until recently, much of a malware’s behavior could be observed via userland hooking of the target process. However, there are more and more techniques that allow one to bypass such hooking mechanisms and hide its true objectives and behavior. Tools such as SysWhispers can be used to perform system call directly and thus avoid the ordinary users-space behavior tracking.
In order to gain more insight for such use cases we suggest using an alternative method of observing malware behavior by using a kernel driver for Windows based systems. Through this presentation we will an in-depth view of how an individual can create a Windows kernel driver for performing system call tracing on recent versions of windows, running on recent CPUs.
This presentation is co-presented with Cristian Done, Security Researcher at Keysight Technologies Romania.
Hunting / Scraping with Favicons (Lightning Talk)
Phishing is as old as it comes in terms of techniques for harvesting credentials and personal information. In the past years at DefCamp, our collegues have presented various methods for detecting phishing websites.
But how can you actually find them? We know threat actors generally reuse phishing kits / templates. One thing that doesn’t really change is the favicon. In this talk, we’ll quickly go over an approach of using Favicon hashing – murmurhash – and use Shodan for finding targets. We’ll present some interesting results and some challenges we’ve identified.
This presentation is co-presented with Andrei Niculae, 4th year student at the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computer Science from Politehnica University of Bucharest.
