HiveHack Space Hacking Village

Hack the Hive. Own the Orbit.

Space systems are no longer isolated machines in orbit. Satellites, ground stations, mission control infrastructure and the networks connecting them form complex cyber-physical environments – and every layer can become an attack surface.

The HiveHack Space Hacking Village brings those systems to the table.

The village offers two ways to enter the Hive: Red Team and Static Challenges.

Whether you want to break your way through a live space infrastructure or investigate standalone challenges at your own pace, every flag brings you closer to the top of the leaderboard.

Both paths contribute to the same leaderboard.

Red Team - Hack Your Way Into the System

Your mission is to penetrate a live space mission environment.

Somewhere in the mission environment, a wireless network provides your way in. Your first objective is to compromise the Wi-Fi and gain access to the internal network.

From there, you will need to enumerate the systems and services you can reach, identify vulnerabilities and work out how to move deeper into the infrastructure.

Once you make it inside, things change.

Your intrusion is detected.

The defenders know someone has breached the network, the clock starts running, and the systems behind the mission begin responding to your presence.

Your objective is simple: hack your way through the infrastructure and get as deep into the system as possible before you are stopped.

Two dedicated physical rigs expose different layers of a simulated space infrastructure, requiring you to enumerate services, identify vulnerabilities, exploit systems and pivot through the environment.

Each rig supports up to 5 players per session, giving you 60 minutes to push as deep into the system as possible.

Every stage takes you closer to the mission’s critical assets.

But once the defenders know you’re there, you are racing against the clock.

You have 60 minutes from detection to make your way through the system before your window closes.

Two rigs. One hour. How far can you get before the defenders catch you?

Static Challenges - Explore the Space Segment

For those who prefer a classic CTF experience, the Static Challenges path provides a collection of standalone challenges inspired by real-world space and aerospace cybersecurity.

Download the challenges, investigate the evidence and find the flags.

Expect a mixture of challenges covering areas such as satellite systems, ground-segment security, networking, digital forensics, reverse engineering, cryptography, OSINT, steganography and other aspects of cyber-
physical infrastructure.

There is no fixed progression between challenges. Work on whichever challenge you want, whenever you want.

The more flags you find, the higher you climb.

One Village. Two Paths. One Leaderboard.

The Red Team and Static Challenges paths are separate experiences, but they contribute to the same competition.

Players can earn points by collecting flags from either path – or from both.

You can spend your time going deep into a live target, solve static challenges between rounds, or combine both approaches to maximize your score.

The leaderboard rewards the players who can do more than just one thing.

Break the system. Investigate the evidence. Find the flags.

Previous Experience

Participants should have a basic understanding of cybersecurity and common CTF techniques.

For the Red Team path, previous experience with penetration testing, networking, Linux, service enumeration and web exploitation is recommended. Knowledge of privilege escalation, pivoting and common offensive-security tooling is useful.

For the Static CTF, experience will depend on the individual challenge.

Challenges range from approachable introductory problems to more advanced tasks, so participants can choose challenges appropriate to their skill level.

Experience with satellite systems or aerospace engineering is not required.

The challenges are designed to be mainly approached using cybersecurity skills, while introducing relevant space-system concepts where needed through brief context and hints to help participants get started or overcome unfamiliar concepts.

Participants are encouraged to research and investigate further when the challenge requires knowledge they do not already have.

Goal of the Competition

– Gain initial access to a live, isolated space-system environment and work your way deeper into the infrastructure through the Red Team path.
– Use cybersecurity skills to enumerate services, identify vulnerabilities, exploit systems and pivot through the environment.
– Investigate and solve standalone Static CTF challenges, collecting flags across a range of space and
cybersecurity-related challenges.
– Learn about the cybersecurity of modern space systems through hands-on challenges covering both space-system and cybersecurity concepts.
– Earn the highest total score on the leaderboard by combining points from both competition paths. In case of a tie, the participant who reached the tied score first wins.

Rules of Engagement

– Participants must bring their own laptop. All competition hardware and infrastructure required for the challenges will be provided.
– The Red Team path is played on two dedicated rigs, with a maximum of 5 participants per rig.
– Each Red Team session lasts 60 minutes from the moment the intrusion is detected. The session ends when the time expires or the participant is stopped by the environment.
– The Red Team environment is isolated. Participants may only interact with systems and services explicitly included in the challenge scope.
– The Static CTF consists of standalone challenges available for download and can be played free-for-all, with no fixed progression or per-challenge time limit.
– Flags submitted through either competition path must be obtained legitimately. Points are awarded per challenge.
– Participants may use legitimate cybersecurity tools, scripts and techniques unless explicitly restricted by a challenge.
– Do not attack other participants, shared infrastructure or systems outside the defined competition scope.
– Do not perform denial-of-service attacks, intentionally disrupt competition infrastructure or damage shared systems.
– Do not modify, destroy or interfere with challenge infrastructure beyond what is required to solve the challenge.
– Do not share flags, solutions or direct answers with other participants during the competition.
– Participants must comply with applicable laws and respect the privacy and security of other participants.
– Any vulnerability or unintended behavior discovered in the competition infrastructure should be reported to the organizers rather than abused outside the intended challenge scope.
– Fair play and sportsmanship are required. The organizers reserve the right to modify, stop or invalidate a challenge and to disqualify participants who violate the rule.
The HiveHack Space Hacking Village is designed to be challenging, competitive and accessible to cybersecurity enthusiasts with different skill sets.

Whether you choose to break into the system or hunt for flags, the objective remains the same:

Find your way into the Hive.
