Party Time: Building a Private Game Server by Reverse Engineering
Sometimes you just want to play an online multiplayer game when you don’t have an internet connection. There is no reasonable option except reverse engineering the game and building your own private server.
In this talk I explain how I built a private server for the game SpyParty (purely for educational purposes of course). This adventure takes us through reverse engineering, advanced network analysis, encryption, compression, and accidentally fixing the internet for the entire country.
Particular highlights include building a wireshark plugin for the game’s custom protocol and the response of the developer when we messaged him to tell him about the project
